Can Red Wine Help Fight Cavities?

Some studies have found that red wine can help fight cavities. With red wine, the fermented parts of the grape have high levels of polyphenols, which are known to repel bacteria on your teeth. The good bacteria in your mouth is able to thrive as the bad bacteria fails to stick to your teeth. Drinking too much, however, can stain your teeth, so be sure to brush after drinking it.

While some researchers found that red wine can fend off harmful bacteria in the mouth the findings do not offer a “green light” to drink more red wine.

Red wine is rich in polyphenols but they are also found in a range of other drinks/foods:

Health Benefits of Wine:

Red wine, in moderation, has long been thought of as heart-healthy. The alcohol and antioxidants may help prevent coronary artery disease, the condition that leads to heart attacks. Other studies have found wine to have protective properties against diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders, while also boosting gut health.

Downside to Red Wine:

Though red wine may have benefits, American Dental Association lists wine as a beverage known to stain teeth. Wine, both red and white, is highly acidic. This acid can deteriorate tooth enamel and cause teeth to look yellow. Without protective enamel, teeth are also at risk for bacteria and decay.

The Takeaway:

Essentially, more research on the effects that wine has on oral health is needed before we can say if the benefits outweigh the concerns. However, it’s safe to say that any risks associated with drinking wine, including risks to your oral health, can be minimized by drinking it in moderation and responsibly.

Red wine may help fight plaque and cavities but brushing, flossing, and using fluoride is the most important thing for oral health. Be sure to get regular check-ups with your dentist.
