What Is a Digital Impression?

Digital Impressions (also known as 3-D intraoral scanning) are the latest technology in capturing a replica of the mouth. By using a wand-like tool connected to a computer and advanced software, a dentist can create a virtual model of the hard and soft tissues in the mouth. The scans are immediately sent to the lab where dentures, crowns, bridges, and retainers can be made quickly and accurately.

Benefits of Digital Impressions

  • Comfort: the 3-D scanning is often much more comfortable for patients than traditional impressions. Those who have sensitive gag reflexes from having goop in the mouth or teeth that are sensitive to cold material will be able to relax since the impression is all-digital. Digital impressions are less messy and more pleasant than the goopy traditional mold material. Patients with a severe gag reflex or sensitive teeth can enjoy a more comfortable experience while a dentist takes the digital impression.
  • Quality: digital impressions limit the margin for error and distortion when compared to traditional impressions. This means that your crown, bridge, or other appliance will fit better in your mouth since the information it was made from is all-digital and very detailed. And when combined with digital X-rays, it also means that dental implants can be placed in a more ideal position than when using regular X-rays alone. Also since the dentist can see the completed scan immediately on the monitor, they know if there are any inaccuracies in the image and can re-do it while the patient is still in the chair.
  • Cost-effective: there is no increase in cost for a digital impression; traditional impressions and 3-D scanning costs the same for the patient.

The digital scanning can be used for both general dentistry and restorative procedures. We regularly use digital impressions in conjunction with X-Rays. Digital impressions are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of technology and state-of-the-art equipment at the Verber Dental Group. This technology allows us to provide patients with the most comprehensive and modern oral health care. Give Capozzi Dental a call today to schedule your appointment.
